The district player programme is the first step on Huronia’s elite player pathway ladder.
Close to 50 boys and girls are presently taking part.
The players have set out on a road that they hope will subsequently lead to an Ontario regional squad and hopefully to represent the province.
The weekly sessions allow Huronia’s best players to train and play with the best, a crucial development factor.
The training centres on four categories, 1 v 1: control; striking and running with the ball.
The practices revolve exclusively around technique and small sided games - all games automatically include all four categories - and the players are encouraged to express themselves without fear of failure or criticism.
The emphasis is on improving individual players who can make a difference.
You cannot produce a team without good players, hence the programme motto: Better Technique = Better Player = Better Team.
The indoor sessions at New Tecumseth Sports Centre, Alliston, will continue through April and then go outside.
The training is designed to place players in an environment where they can learn and make decisions themselves. Telling players what to do all the time is counter productive. Canada does not need robotic players; it needs individuals who can turn a game on its head at the highest levels.
Instruction is kept to an absolute minimum, so much so that at least 95% of the time players are active.
When sessions are stopped, problems are solved by extracting answers from the players using guided discovery and questions and answers.
Anyone who wants to tryout for the programme can contact the Technical Director. There will also be open tryouts at the end of April and early May, details to be announced.
Footnote: The Huronia under 12s will take part in five weekend festivals this summer with district squads from York, North York, Toronto, Durham and Peel regions. There will be festivals in June, July, August and two in September. The festivals allow staff from the Ontario Soccer Association to identify players.
